Best Medical College in India 2026: NIRF 2025 Top 10, NEET Counselling, Fees and How to Choose
In short: In the NIRF 2025 medical category AIIMS Delhi ranks first, followed by PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, JIPMER Puducherry and SGPGIMS Lucknow. KGMU Lucknow is 8th. Admission to MBBS needs a qualifying NEET UG score and counselling through MCC for the all-India quota and through state authorities for state seats. Rank is useful, but fees, clinical exposure and recognition matter equally.
What is the best medical college in India? Start with the NIRF 2025 list
If you are trying to find the best medical college in India, you are standing at the point where years of effort meet a very short list of choices. It is the evening of the result, or the week before counselling, and everyone has an opinion. This guide is meant to be the calm voice in that room: evidence first, honesty about what is uncertain, and respect for the cost of every decision.
The Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released its 2025 results on 4 September 2025. In the medical category, the top ten were:
| Rank | Institution | City | MBBS offered? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) | New Delhi | Yes |
| 2 | Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) | Chandigarh | Postgraduate and super-speciality focus |
| 3 | Christian Medical College (CMC) | Vellore | Yes |
| 4 | Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) | Puducherry | Yes |
| 5 | Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) | Lucknow | Postgraduate only |
| 6 | Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Institute of Medical Sciences | Varanasi | Yes |
| 7 | National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) | Bengaluru | Postgraduate and specialist |
| 8 | King George's Medical University (KGMU) | Lucknow | Yes |
| 9 | Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | Coimbatore | Yes |
| 10 | Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal | Manipal | Yes |
The first three places were consistent across the sources we reviewed. Some outlets disagree on lower places, and one printed KGMU's state wrongly, so confirm on the official NIRF site and check whether a newer edition exists.
A critical point for MBBS aspirants: several institutions on this list, such as PGIMER, SGPGIMS and NIMHANS, are postgraduate or specialist institutes and do not admit students to MBBS. A "top rank" is not always a seat you can apply for after Class 12.
How we judged: method, limits and independence
Who we are. The Pratiyogita Kosh editorial team wrote this guide. We are an independent exam-preparation and college-information platform. We do not belong to any college, coaching centre or counselling agency, and no one paid to be listed. Our editorial policy explains how we review content.
Sources. NIRF 2025 for ranking, the National Medical Commission (NMC) for recognition of colleges and rules for MBBS, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for all-India counselling, and each state's counselling authority for state seats.
What NIRF measures. It scores institutions on teaching and learning resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and peer perception. For medical institutes, research output and postgraduate programmes weigh heavily. That is useful, but it is not a direct review of how an MBBS student is taught on the wards.
Our limits. We have not visited every campus. We do not quote private fee levels because published figures differ between sources. We prefer to point you to the primary document than to repeat a number that may be wrong.
Eligibility for MBBS anywhere in India
- Age: minimum 17 years on 31 December of the admission year.
- Education: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English; NMC rules set the minimum PCB marks (50 percent for General, with lower minimums for reserved categories).
- Entrance: a qualifying NEET UG score, mandatory for all MBBS seats in government and private colleges.
- Nationality: Indian citizens, OCI cardholders and other categories as notified.

- State counselling. Each state runs counselling for the remaining 85 percent of state government seats and for private college seats in the state, with its own domicile and category rules. For Uttar Pradesh see our guide to the best medical college in UP.
- Documents. NEET scorecard, admit card, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, category and domicile certificates, photo ID and photographs.
- Fee payment and reporting through official portals only.

Prepare with NEET mock tests and the PYQ papers, and use the admission tools to plan your steps.
Best colleges for MBBS in India: what each type offers
AIIMS Delhi and the newer AIIMS
AIIMS Delhi, first in NIRF 2025 medical, remains the benchmark for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in India. Admission is through NEET UG and MCC counselling. Several newer AIIMS institutions have opened across the country, including in Uttar Pradesh at Gorakhpur and Raebareli. Their facilities and faculty strength vary, so read the current information about the specific institute.
CMC Vellore
Ranked 3rd, CMC Vellore is a private, minority-run institution with a mission-driven tradition. Its MBBS admission follows its own selection process, which includes NEET UG scores and institution-specific stages. Check the college's official admission notice for the current method.
JIPMER Puducherry
Ranked 4th, JIPMER is an institution of national importance with admission through MCC counselling for MBBS. It is a good example of a government institution with a strong clinical and research reputation.
BHU Institute of Medical Sciences, KGMU and SGPGIMS (Uttar Pradesh)
BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences (6th) and KGMU (8th, up from 19th) are strong MBBS options in the state, and SGPGIMS (5th) is a leading postgraduate institute. See our guide to the best medical college in Lucknow.
Private and deemed universities: Amrita and KMC Manipal
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (9th) and Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (10th), are well-regarded private institutions. They offer strong infrastructure but fees are far above government colleges, so compare the total cost with your family's capacity.
Other strong government medical colleges
India has several hundred medical colleges recognised by the NMC, including many long-established government colleges in Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and other states. Many of them provide excellent clinical training and are far cheaper than private colleges. Use state counselling brochures and the NMC list to find those in your state.
Government vs private: a decision table
| Factor | Government colleges | Private and deemed colleges |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Low | High to very high |
| Seat competition | Very high NEET rank needed | Lower rank may be enough |
| Patient exposure | Typically large | Varies; verify occupancy |
| Financial risk | Low | High if loan-funded |
| Facilities | Varies | Often newer |
| Rank evidence | Strong at top institutions | Strong at a few; others vary |
Course duration and syllabus
MBBS is 4.5 years of study plus a one-year compulsory rotating internship, about 5.5 years in total. The NMC's competency-based curriculum has three phases: pre-clinical (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry), para-clinical (pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, forensic medicine, community medicine) and clinical (medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology and others), with early clinical exposure and training in ethics and communication.
Fees: think in totals, not in headlines
Government college tuition is a small fraction of private tuition, but hostel, mess, exam and miscellaneous charges still add up. Private and deemed college fees can reach very large totals over the course, and published figures vary by source and year, so read the official fee schedule.
Ask for these in writing
- The complete five-year fee, year by year.
- Hostel, mess, caution deposit and university charges.
- Annual increases.
- Bond or service conditions.
- Refund rules.
A responsible calculation (illustration)
If a seat costs Rs 20 lakh a year, tuition alone over five years is Rs 1 crore. Decide whether that is reasonable by comparing with realistic earnings during and after training, and with any loan terms. A seat that forces ten years of financial strain can undermine the very career it was meant to start. Alternatives with dignity include a government seat in another state, a carefully planned repeat year, or related courses such as BDS, BPT and B.Sc Nursing.
What the rank does and does not tell you
A top NIRF rank signals strong faculty, research, patient load and outcomes. It does not tell you your classroom size, whether the hostel is safe and comfortable, how supportive teachers are, or whether the college is a good fit for your personality. Visit if possible. Ask a final-year student what they would change.
Studying abroad vs in India
Studying medicine abroad can look cheaper in the brochure, but there are risks that Indian families must weigh carefully: whether the degree is recognised for practice in India, the screening test required after return, language and clinical-exposure differences, and political or safety risks. Verify with the NMC rules on foreign medical graduates before paying any deposit. Studying in India, even in a modest government college, avoids many of these risks.
Career options, salary and what comes after MBBS
After MBBS and internship, doctors register with a state medical council. Paths include practice, NEET PG for specialisation, government medical services, hospital employment, public health, research, teaching, and working abroad after passing licensing exams.
Earnings vary enormously by sector and specialty. We do not publish a single average salary because it would not be honest. Ask colleges about NEET PG success rates and the proportion of graduates who obtained a postgraduate seat within a few years.
Skills a medical college must build
- Clinical reasoning and examination skills.
- Communication and empathy, including difficult conversations.
- Procedural competence under supervision.
- Ethics, consent and professionalism.
- Understanding of evidence and research.
- Personal resilience, supported by counselling.
Scope of medical education in India
India has a large and growing healthcare sector, a shortage of doctors in many regions, and expanding postgraduate and super-speciality training. A well-trained doctor has options in clinical practice, public health, research, medical education and healthcare management. The scope is real, but it demands long training and careful financial planning.
Pros and cons of aiming for a top-ranked medical college
Advantages
- Strong faculty and clinical volume.
- Research opportunities and exposure to leading specialists.
- Better chances at postgraduate selection and fellowships, through peer networks and training quality.
- Respect among employers and universities abroad.
Limitations
- Very competitive entry.
- A top-ranked institute may be postgraduate-only.
- High-cost private options can cause heavy debt.
- Rank does not guarantee a personal fit.
