In short: KGMU Lucknow (NIRF 2025 medical rank 8) and BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi (rank 6) are the strongest medical options in Uttar Pradesh, with SGPGIMS Lucknow (rank 5) leading postgraduate training. AMU's medical college and many state government colleges follow. Admission needs NEET UG and either MCC or UP state counselling, and seat numbers and fees change each year.

What is the best medical college in UP? What the 2025 evidence shows

Every year, families across Uttar Pradesh sit with a result sheet, a counselling brochure and a calculator, trying to answer one question: which is the best medical college in UP for my NEET rank and my family's means? It is the question of a student who has studied for two years or more, and a household that may have stretched its savings to get here. We wrote this guide to treat that question with the seriousness it deserves.

The most reliable public evidence is the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, released on 4 September 2025. In the medical category, institutions from Uttar Pradesh in the top ten were:

NIRF 2025 medical rankInstitutionCityNote
5Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS)LucknowPostgraduate institute, no MBBS
6Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Institute of Medical SciencesVaranasiMBBS available
8King George's Medical University (KGMU)LucknowMBBS available; up from 19th the previous year

So KGMU and BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences are the two strongest places in Uttar Pradesh to study MBBS on the evidence available, and SGPGIMS is the state's top postgraduate destination. A word of care: one outlet's table printed KGMU's state incorrectly, which is a reminder to check ranks on the official NIRF site rather than trusting a single article.

How we judged: method, limits and independence

Who we are. The Pratiyogita Kosh editorial team prepared this guide. We are an independent exam-preparation and college-information platform with no affiliation to any medical college, coaching institute or counselling agency. No college paid to be mentioned. Read our editorial policy.

Evidence. NIRF 2025 for ranking, the National Medical Commission (NMC) for recognition, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the 15 percent All India Quota, and the Uttar Pradesh Directorate General of Medical Education and Training (DGME) for state counselling at dgme.up.gov.in.

Caveats you deserve to hear. Published figures for Uttar Pradesh MBBS seats disagree across sources. During the 2025 cycle, different reports gave different totals for seats and for the number of colleges (for instance, one report cited 32 medical colleges and another cited a much larger number of medical institutions of all kinds). We therefore avoid quoting a single state total. The official seat matrix issued with each counselling round is the only number that counts.

NIRF's limits for MBBS students. The medical category rewards research, postgraduate teaching and outcomes for the institution as a whole. It is a good sign of strength but not a direct measure of your MBBS classroom and wards.

Eligibility and the 85:15 seat structure

  • Age: at least 17 years on 31 December of the admission year.
  • Education: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English; the NMC prescribes minimum marks in PCB (50 percent for General, lower for reserved categories).
  • Entrance: a qualifying NEET UG score.
  • Seat structure: 15 percent of government medical seats go to the All India Quota (MCC counselling). The remaining 85 percent state quota is filled by UP counselling and is open to candidates who meet the state's domicile and category rules. Private colleges have their own seat categories within state counselling, including management and NRI quotas under regulations.

Read our MBBS course guide for details, or the BDS guide if you are also considering dental.

Admission process: the order that protects your seat

  1. NEET UG result. Note your all-India rank, category rank and state rank.
  2. MCC counselling (AIQ). Register at mcc.nic.in. This round includes government seats in UP, such as KGMU and BHU's IMS, subject to quota rules.
  3. UP NEET UG counselling. Registration, choice-filling, seat allotment and reporting are announced on the state portal and dgme.up.gov.in. In 2025 the state counselling ran multiple rounds, and the schedule was revised more than once as new MBBS seats were approved.
  4. Documents. Domicile certificate, category and income certificates in the correct format, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, NEET scorecard and admit card, photo ID, photographs and a character certificate where asked.
  5. Fee payment and reporting. Pay only through the official portal. Keep receipts.
  6. Stay for later rounds if you want an upgrade, and read the rules on free exit and security deposit before you commit.

Practise with NEET mock tests and the PYQ papers, and plan your steps with the admission tools.

Best colleges for MBBS in Uttar Pradesh: profiles you can check

BHU Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi

Part of Banaras Hindu University (a central university, ranked 6th among universities in NIRF 2025), with Sir Sunderlal Hospital as its main teaching hospital. NIRF 2025 medical rank 6. MBBS admission is through MCC counselling, because it is a central institution.

Other government medical colleges in UP

Uttar Pradesh has government medical colleges in Prayagraj (Motilal Nehru), Agra (S.N.), Kanpur (GSVM), Meerut (LLRM), Jhansi, Gorakhpur (BRD), Kannauj, Saifai (UP University of Medical Sciences) and many districts, as well as the newer government colleges established in recent years, and the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences at Gorakhpur and Raebareli. Their clinical case volumes are generally high. Their rank evidence, fees and seat numbers differ; use the counselling brochure.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow

A government institute offering MBBS and postgraduate programmes; a common second government option in Lucknow for state-quota candidates.

Private medical colleges

Private colleges in UP include Era's Lucknow Medical College, Integral Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Career Institute of Medical Sciences, and colleges in Noida, Greater Noida, Meerut, Moradabad, Bareilly, Varanasi and other cities. Ask each for the NMC recognition status for the current batch, the fee schedule in writing, hospital bed occupancy, and the latest university examination pass rate.

Duration and syllabus of MBBS

MBBS lasts 4.5 years of study plus a one-year compulsory rotating internship, about 5.5 years in all. The NMC's competency-based curriculum covers pre-clinical subjects (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry), para-clinical subjects (pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, forensic medicine, community medicine) and clinical subjects (medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ENT and ophthalmology) with early clinical exposure, ethics and communication training. When you visit, ask how many hours of ward teaching students actually get each week.

Fees: how to think about cost

Published fee schedules differ between government and private colleges and they change from year to year. We do not quote a single private fee because reports conflict and a wrong number can steer a family into hardship. For instance, a 2025 news report on UP counselling noted that the MBBS fee at one government-linked medical college in Varanasi was above Rs 5 lakh for state and all-India candidates, which shows that "government" does not always mean a tiny fee. Read each college's fee line in the official seat matrix.

Questions to ask in writing

  • Total tuition for the full course, year by year.
  • Hostel, mess, caution deposit, university and examination charges.
  • Whether the fee increases each year and by how much.
  • Any bond or compulsory service condition.
  • Refund policy if you leave.

A sober calculation (illustration)

If a private seat costs Rs 12 lakh a year, five years of tuition alone is Rs 60 lakh, before hostel and living costs. Compare that against your family's savings and any loan repayment capacity. If the numbers cannot work, the dignified alternatives are a government seat in another state, a carefully planned repeat year, or related courses such as BDS, BPT, B.Pharm or B.Sc Nursing.

NEET score, state rank and what cutoffs really tell you

State counselling uses a state merit list and the category and domicile rules of Uttar Pradesh. Closing ranks differ by college, category and round, and move every year with the number of candidates and the seat matrix. Unofficial sites publish "expected cutoffs" that may be wrong. Official closing ranks appear in the allotment results of each round, and that is the only record you should treat as fact. As a rule: treat published cutoffs as rough direction, fill more choices than you think you need, and put your genuine first preference first.

Career options, salary and what comes after MBBS

After MBBS and internship, doctors can practise after registration with a state medical council, prepare for NEET PG for specialisation, join government medical services, work in hospitals, pursue public health or research, teach, or work abroad after passing licensing exams. SGPGIMS and KGMU are strong postgraduate destinations in the state.

We do not quote an "average MBBS salary" because earnings vary widely by specialty, sector and city. Ask each college for its NEET PG qualification record and how many graduates secured postgraduate seats.

Skills a medical college should build

  • Clinical reasoning and examination skills.
  • Communication, empathy and consent practices.
  • Procedural skills under supervision.
  • Ethics and professionalism.
  • Evidence-based practice and basic research literacy.
  • Personal resilience and access to counselling support.

Scope of medical education in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has an enormous patient population and a growing number of medical colleges and AIIMS institutions. That offers broad clinical exposure, but it also means that the quality of teaching hospitals varies. The scope is excellent for students who choose a college with a working hospital, qualified faculty and honest records. After MBBS, the state offers postgraduate and super-speciality training at several institutions.

Conclusion: a college is a place, a doctor is a promise

Uttar Pradesh has real strengths: KGMU's century-old tradition, BHU's Institute of Medical Sciences, the postgraduate depth of SGPGIMS, and a growing network of government and private colleges. It also has noise: agents, rumours and conflicting numbers. The only protection against that noise is to rely on official sources, ask for fees in writing and choose within what your family can carry.

Do that, and whichever seat you receive can become the start of a good career. For more detail, read our guides to the best medical college in Lucknow, the best medical college in India and the best university in UP.
