Best Medical College in Lucknow (2026): KGMU, RMLIMS, Private Colleges, Fees and NEET Cutoffs
In short: King George's Medical University (KGMU) is widely regarded as the best medical college in Lucknow, ranked 8th in the NIRF 2025 medical category. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences is the other major government option, while Era's, Integral and Career Institute offer private seats. SGPGIMS, ranked 5th, is a postgraduate institute. NEET UG score and UP counselling decide admission.
What is the best medical college in Lucknow? The answer first
For most students who qualify NEET UG, the best medical college in Lucknow is King George's Medical University (KGMU). It is a state medical university with a history that goes back to 1911, and in the NIRF 2025 rankings it climbed to 8th place in the medical category from 19th the year before. The second major government option is the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS). Private MBBS seats in the city are offered by colleges such as Era's Lucknow Medical College, Integral Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, and Career Institute of Medical Sciences. The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), ranked 5th in NIRF 2025, is a famous name but is a postgraduate institute: it does not admit students to MBBS.
Behind every one of these names there is a student who studied through Class 11 and 12 with the lights on late, a parent who counted the cost of coaching, and a rank on a result page that now has to be turned into a seat. We wrote this guide for that family. We will not hand you a false certainty. We will show you what is known, what is disputed, and how to decide.
How we judged, and why you can trust the method
Who we are. This guide is prepared by the editorial team of Pratiyogita Kosh, an independent exam-preparation platform. We are not affiliated with any medical college, coaching institute or counselling agency, and none paid for placement. Our editorial policy explains how content is reviewed.
Evidence we used. NIRF 2025 (released 4 September 2025) for ranking evidence; the National Medical Commission (NMC) for recognition; the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for all-India quota counselling; and the Uttar Pradesh Directorate General of Medical Education and Training (DGME) for state counselling. Fee and seat figures from websites that aggregate data often disagree, so we mark them "verify" and ask you to confirm in the official prospectus.
An important honesty point about rankings. NIRF's medical category ranks institutions and gives significant weight to research, postgraduate teaching and graduation outcomes. A high rank tells you an institution is strong overall. It does not automatically tell you how good the MBBS experience is for a first-year student. That is why we also look at patient load, clinical exposure, internship, faculty and student feedback, which you can check yourself on a visit.
What makes a medical college good for an MBBS student
| Criterion | What to look for | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| NMC recognition | The college and the intake year are on the NMC list | nmc.org.in |
| Teaching hospital | Functioning attached hospital with adequate beds and a large outpatient flow | Visit the OPD; ask for NMC inspection reports if available |
| Faculty | Full-time, qualified faculty in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry as well as clinical subjects | Faculty list on the college site |
| Clinical exposure | Rotations in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and emergency from early years | Ask current students |
| Results | Pass percentage in university exams and NEET PG outcomes | Ask for records; do not rely on a brochure |
| Total cost | Tuition, hostel, mess, exam, uniform and bond conditions | Official fee notice |
| Safety and wellbeing | Hostel conditions, ragging control, counselling support | NMC anti-ragging rules, visit |
Eligibility for MBBS in Lucknow
The rules are set nationally by the NMC and apply to every medical college in the country, including Lucknow.
- Age: at least 17 years on 31 December of the year of admission.
- Education: pass in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Biotechnology) and English from a recognised board.
- Marks: minimum 50 percent in PCB for the General category, with lower minimums for reserved categories, as fixed by NMC regulations and counselling notices.
- Entrance: a qualifying score in NEET UG is compulsory for every MBBS seat, government or private.
- Nationality: Indian citizens, OCI and other categories as notified; NRI quota seats follow separate rules.
Always confirm the current-year eligibility in the MCC and UP counselling information bulletin. See our MBBS course guide for the full course picture and the BDS guide if you are also considering dental.
Admission process: NEET UG, MCC and UP counselling in order
- Take NEET UG and note your all-India rank and your category rank.
- Register for MCC counselling for the 15 percent All India Quota seats, which include government college seats in Uttar Pradesh. The MCC site is mcc.nic.in.
- Register for UP NEET UG counselling run by the state, which fills the remaining state-quota seats in government and private colleges. Official information appears on the state counselling portal and dgme.up.gov.in.
- Fill choices carefully. Rank colleges in the order you truly prefer. Locking and freezing options are strategic: understand them before you decide.
- Document verification and fee payment within the stated dates. A missed document is the commonest cause of a lost seat.
- Reporting to college with originals. Keep photocopies and soft copies safe.
Practise before the exam cycle with the NEET mock tests on Pratiyogita Kosh and past papers in the PYQ section. Plan the rest of the journey with our admission tools.
Best colleges for MBBS in Lucknow: profiles you can verify
The order below groups institutions by type. It is not a score. Public rank claims are limited to what was reported for NIRF 2025.
King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow
- Type: State medical university, government.
- What stands out: One of Uttar Pradesh's oldest and largest teaching hospitals, with a very high patient flow, a broad range of super-speciality departments, and a large alumni network in India and abroad.
- Rank evidence: 8th in the NIRF 2025 medical category, up from 19th; also reported 50th in the overall university category and 29th among state public universities.
- Seats: Multiple aggregators list 250 MBBS seats; confirm the current figure from the official prospectus and the NMC.
- Fees: Government-level tuition; one aggregator reported roughly Rs 55,000 a year in 2025. Hostel and mess are separate. Verify in the current fee notice.
- Best for: Students with a strong NEET rank who want the strongest public clinical training in the state.
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow
- Type: State government medical institute with an attached hospital.
- What stands out: A rapidly grown institution that offers MBBS, MD, MS and DM/MCh programmes and is a popular second government option for students who miss KGMU.

- Best for: Students seeking a government seat at government fees.
Era's Lucknow Medical College and Hospital
- Type: Private medical college affiliated with a private university.

- Best for: Students who qualify NEET but do not secure a government seat and can afford private fees.
Integral Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (IIMSR)
- Type: Private medical college under Integral University, with an attached hospital.
- Best for: NEET qualifiers considering a private seat in Lucknow. Confirm the NMC recognition, intake and fee for the year you apply.

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS)
- Type: Autonomous postgraduate institute.
- Rank evidence: 5th in the NIRF 2025 medical category.
- Important note: SGPGIMS does not offer MBBS. It admits doctors for DM, MCh, MD and some paramedical and doctoral programmes. Many ambitious MBBS students aim to reach it after postgraduate entrance.
AIIMS Raebareli (nearby, not in Lucknow city)
AIIMS Raebareli is in the Raebareli district, a few hours' drive from Lucknow. MBBS admission is through MCC counselling. Check the MCC bulletin for seat numbers.

NEET cutoffs: what the numbers say and what they do not
Cutoffs are the most searched and most misquoted numbers in medical admissions. Here is what we can say honestly.
- Third-party aggregators reported that in 2025 the KGMU General category closing rank in All India Quota counselling ranged from about 1,600 in Round 1 to about 2,600 in later rounds. These are not official and they are for AIQ, not the state quota.
- The UP state quota uses a state merit rank that is different from the all-India rank. Some sites offer projected closing ranks of roughly 900 to 1,100 for KGMU General category in state counselling; these are estimates, not results.
- Cutoffs move every year with the number of candidates, paper difficulty, the seat matrix and category-wise demand.
Use cutoffs only as a rough direction. The official allotment results on the MCC and UP counselling portals are the only reliable record. A student who is two hundred ranks beyond a published number should still fill the choice, because seat resignations and later rounds change outcomes.
Duration and syllabus of MBBS
MBBS in India is a 4.5-year academic course followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship, in total about 5.5 years. The syllabus has three professional phases:
- Phase I: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and an early introduction to clinical practice.
- Phase II: Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine.
- Phase III: Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and allied subjects, with clinical postings.
The NMC's competency-based curriculum includes early clinical exposure, communication skills and ethics training. Ask any college how many hours of bedside teaching per week students actually receive in the second and third phases.
Fees: what a government seat and a private seat can mean
We deliberately avoid giving you a "typical" private fee, because published figures conflict and a wrong number can mislead a family's decisions. This is how to think about it:
- Government seats (KGMU, RMLIMS and other state colleges) have low tuition. The real costs are hostel, mess, books, travel and exam fees.
- Private seats in Uttar Pradesh are priced in lakhs of rupees per year, and total cost over the course can be a very large sum. The state government fixes fee bands through a committee, so check the fee regulatory notice for the year.
- Hidden costs to ask about: caution deposit, hostel and mess annual charges, university registration fee, and any bond or service condition tied to government seats.
A sober calculation (for illustration only)
If a private seat costs, for example, Rs 15 lakh a year, the five-year tuition alone would be Rs 75 lakh before living expenses. Compare that with the realistic first-year postgraduate resident stipend and your family's ability to borrow. A student who commits to such a fee without a plan can carry a burden for ten years. If the numbers do not work, the right decision may be a government seat in another state, a repeat year with a strong plan, or a related course such as BDS, BPT or B.Sc Nursing. There is dignity in each of those paths.
Career options, salary and what happens after MBBS
After MBBS and internship, graduates can: register with a state medical council and practise; prepare for NEET PG to specialise; join government medical services through state and central selection; work in corporate hospitals; pursue public health, research, teaching or medical administration; or work abroad after passing the destination country's licensing exams.
Salary depends heavily on the path. Government resident and medical officer posts follow pay scales set by the employing government. Corporate hospitals and private practice vary widely. We will not publish a single "average MBBS salary" because the honest range is very wide and changes by specialty and city. Ask any college for their NEET PG qualification record and the proportion of graduates who got a postgraduate seat within three years.
Skills a medical college must build
- Clinical reasoning, built by seeing and examining many patients under supervision.
- Communication and empathy, especially breaking bad news and obtaining consent.
- Procedural skills, from suturing to emergency stabilisation.
- Ethics and professionalism.
- Research literacy, reading papers and basic data analysis.
- Resilience, because medicine is long, demanding and emotionally heavy. Good colleges give access to student counselling.
Scope of medical education in Lucknow
Lucknow is a major healthcare hub for central and eastern Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. KGMU, RMLIMS, SGPGIMS and the district hospitals see an enormous volume of patients. For a student that means broad clinical exposure that is difficult to match in smaller cities. After MBBS, the city also offers postgraduate training and super-speciality opportunities. The same ecosystem supports nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and allied health courses, which you can explore through the Lucknow college directory.
Government vs private medical colleges: how to decide
| Factor | Government (KGMU, RMLIMS) | Private (Era's, Integral, CIMS) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Low | Much higher |
| Entry competition | Very high NEET rank needed | Lower rank may be enough |
| Patient exposure | Typically very large | Varies; check hospital occupancy |
| Hostel and campus | Older infrastructure in many cases | Often newer |
| Seat security | Seat tied to counselling; some bonds | Seat tied to fee schedule |
| Financial risk | Low | High if loan-funded |
A government seat is generally the safer choice for financial wellbeing. A private seat may be right if the family can afford it comfortably and the college has verified NMC recognition and a functioning hospital.

Limitations
- Government seats require high NEET ranks and are closely contested.
- Private fees are high and published numbers vary, so families must verify in writing.

Your pre-counselling checklist
- Keep both your AIQ and state rank handy.
- Download the prospectus and fee notice of every college you will list.
- Check NMC recognition of each college and intake year.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best medical college in Lucknow?
KGMU is generally considered the best medical college in Lucknow, with a NIRF 2025 medical rank of 8th. RMLIMS is the other major government option. Private options include Era's, Integral and Career Institute of Medical Sciences.
Is SGPGIMS good for MBBS?
SGPGIMS does not offer MBBS. It is a postgraduate institute (ranked 5th in NIRF 2025 medical) where doctors train for DM, MCh and MD after MBBS.
How many MBBS seats are there in KGMU?
Several aggregators list 250 seats, but you should confirm the current figure in the KGMU prospectus and the NMC records because seat matrices change.
What NEET rank is needed for KGMU?
Aggregators reported general category All India Quota closing ranks of roughly 1,600 to 2,600 in 2025 counselling, and projected state ranks of about 900 to 1,100. These are unofficial, and results change every year, so use them only as a rough guide.
What are the MBBS fees in KGMU?
One aggregator reported about Rs 55,000 per year in 2025 for tuition, with hostel and mess extra. Confirm in the official fee notice.
Which is the best private medical college in Lucknow?

Can I get MBBS in Lucknow without NEET?
No. A qualifying NEET UG score is mandatory for MBBS admission in every government and private medical college in India.
Is it better to take a private seat in Lucknow or a government seat in another state?
If a private seat strains the family's finances, a government seat elsewhere is often wiser. Compare the total five-year cost, the hospital exposure and the security of the seat.
Does the NIRF rank decide which college I should choose?
It is a useful input, but not the only one. NIRF measures institution-wide performance, including research and postgraduate teaching, so check clinical exposure and student experience too.
What alternatives are there if I miss an MBBS seat?
Consider a repeat year with a realistic plan, BDS, BAMS or BHMS through NEET counselling, physiotherapy, nursing, pharmacy or allied health courses. See our guides to BDS, BPT, B.Pharm and B.Sc Nursing.
Conclusion: a rank is a number, a doctor is a person
You are not only choosing a building. You are choosing the place where you will first see a patient, first lose one, and first understand why you wanted this in the first place. KGMU is the strongest name in Lucknow for a government MBBS seat, RMLIMS is a significant second, and the private colleges offer opportunity at a price that each family must weigh carefully against its means.
Do the honest work: verify NMC recognition, read the fee notice, speak to students, and make your choice list in the order you truly prefer. Then go forward with confidence.
