Best University in India 2026: NIRF 2025 Top 10, Admissions, Fees and How to Choose
In short: In the NIRF 2025 universities category, IISc Bengaluru ranks first, followed by JNU, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Delhi, BHU, BITS Pilani, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Jadavpur University and AMU. These are strongest overall, but the best university for you depends on your course, entrance route, budget and career goal.
What is the best university in India? The top ten, then the truth
Every year, as results arrive and forms open, millions of families type the same question into a search box: what is the best university in India? Behind it there is often fear. A student fears that one wrong choice will close doors. A parent fears paying for a name that does not deliver. We understand that fear, and we want you to be able to decide with clear eyes.
The most widely used official reference is the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), run by the Ministry of Education. The NIRF 2025 results were released on 4 September 2025. In the universities category, the top ten were:
| Rank | University | City | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indian Institute of Science (IISc) | Bengaluru | Deemed, research |
| 2 | Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) | New Delhi | Central |
| 3 | Manipal Academy of Higher Education | Manipal | Deemed, private |
| 4 | Jamia Millia Islamia | New Delhi | Central |
| 5 | University of Delhi | New Delhi | Central |
| 6 | Banaras Hindu University (BHU) | Varanasi | Central |
| 7 | Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani | Pilani | Deemed, private |
| 8 | Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham | Coimbatore | Deemed, private |
| 9 | Jadavpur University | Kolkata | State |
| 10 | Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) | Aligarh | Central |
Sources reported this order consistently, with IISc and JNU keeping their first and second places; one outlet's list differed in the lower places and appeared to be an error. Confirm on nirfindia.org, and check whether a newer edition has been published.
Now the truth that no ranking page likes to say: a ranking tells you which institutions score highest overall on a fixed set of measures. It does not tell you which is best for you. IISc is outstanding for science research but is not a place to study law. JNU is superb for social sciences, languages and international studies but is not where most students go for engineering. The right question is "best for what?"
How we judged: method, limits and independence
Who we are. The Pratiyogita Kosh editorial team prepared this guide. Pratiyogita Kosh is an independent exam-preparation and college-information platform. We are not affiliated with any institution listed here, and none paid to be featured. Read our editorial policy.
How we used the data. We treated NIRF as an external check, and UGC, AICTE, NMC, the Bar Council of India and the Pharmacy Council of India as the authorities on legal recognition. We did not create a new ranking. Where sources conflicted, we said so.
What the NIRF number does and does not measure. NIRF scores teaching and learning resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. A high score reflects strength across those parameters for the institution as a whole, and a university with a few brilliant departments can still rank lower than a university with balanced strength.
Our limits. Rankings change every year, and a newer edition may exist when you read this. We did not verify fee schedules for every university; always read the current prospectus.
Eligibility: the common conditions
| Level | Typical eligibility | Typical entrance |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. and others) | Class 12 pass from a recognised board with subjects suited to the programme | CUET UG for most central universities; own tests or merit for others |
| Engineering | Class 12 with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry or equivalent | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT and university tests |
| Medicine | Class 12 with PCB and English; age 17 by 31 December | NEET UG |
| Law | Class 12 or graduation depending on programme | CLAT, AILET, LSAT-India, university tests |
| Postgraduate | Relevant bachelor's degree with minimum marks | CUET PG, university tests, GATE (technical) |
| Management | Bachelor's degree | CAT, CMAT, XAT, GMAT |
Category-wise reservation and relaxation vary by institution type. Central universities follow central rules; state universities follow state rules; private institutions follow their own policies within regulations.
Admission process: a calendar you can follow
- Pick the course, then the university. Famous names help only if the department matches your goal.
- Register for the right entrance test. For most central universities, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is the gateway. Practise with free CUET mock tests and review papers in the PYQ section.
- Create a document folder early: marksheets, category certificate, income certificate (if applicable), domicile certificate, photo ID, photographs and signature scans.
- Fill your choice list honestly. Rank courses in the order you truly prefer, and include safe options.
- Watch counselling dates. Seat acceptance and fee payment deadlines are short.
- Verify recognition of the programme with UGC, AICTE, NMC, BCI or PCI before paying.

Best colleges and universities in India by purpose
The top ten above is the best overall evidence available. Here is how to read it by goal.
For pure science and research: IISc Bengaluru
Ranked first in the universities category, IISc is a research-intensive institution. Its undergraduate programme and its research degrees are highly selective. It is best for students who want a research career in science or engineering.
For social sciences, languages and public policy: JNU and Delhi University
JNU (2nd) and the University of Delhi (5th) are central universities where arts and social science students find broad faculty and a large intellectual community. Admission is typically through CUET.
For health and professional programmes: Manipal and Amrita
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (3rd) and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (8th) are private deemed universities with medical, engineering, management and allied-health programmes. Fees are far higher than at public universities, so compare the cost with documented outcomes.
For inclusive and diverse campuses: Jamia Millia Islamia and AMU
Jamia (4th) and AMU (10th) are central universities with broad programme ranges, including engineering and law.
For multi-disciplinary public education: BHU
BHU (6th) in Varanasi, established in 1916, has one of the largest residential campuses in Asia and offers a very wide range of programmes. It is also strong in medicine, with its Institute of Medical Sciences ranked 6th in the NIRF 2025 medical category.
For engineering and applied sciences: BITS Pilani, Jadavpur University and the IITs
BITS Pilani (7th) is a leading private option, entered via BITSAT. Jadavpur University (9th) is a respected state university with strong engineering and arts. The IITs rank in NIRF's engineering category, not in the universities list; IIT Madras has been first in the overall category for seven consecutive years, as reported in 2025.
For medicine: AIIMS Delhi and its peers
NIRF 2025 medical ranks: AIIMS Delhi 1st, PGIMER Chandigarh 2nd, CMC Vellore 3rd, JIPMER Puducherry 4th, SGPGIMS Lucknow 5th. See our guide to the best medical college in India.
For management: the IIMs
NIRF ranks management institutes in a separate category. IIM Lucknow ranked 5th in 2025. See our MBA guide.
Central vs state vs private vs deemed: what the label means
| Type | Who funds and regulates | Fees | Admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central university | Central government, UGC | Low | Mostly CUET and national tests |
| State university | State government, UGC | Low | State process, merit or own test |
| Deemed university | Granted status by the government, may be private or public | Varies; often high | University tests and national tests |
| Private university | Established by state law, UGC recognition | Higher | University tests and national tests |
Course duration and syllabus: what to verify
Under the National Education Policy 2020, many universities offer four-year undergraduate programmes with options to exit with a certificate or diploma after year 1 or 2 and a bachelor's degree after year 3, and some still run the three-year scheme. Engineering remains 4 years, MBBS is 4.5 years plus a one-year internship, LL.B is 3 years and integrated law 5 years, and MBA is 2 years. Ask for the current syllabus, credit structure and the number of weeks of internship, lab or clinical work.
Fees: how to compare fairly
Fee schedules are published in each prospectus and change annually. As a general pattern, central and state universities charge relatively low tuition, while private and deemed universities charge several times more. Compare:
- Tuition per year and for the full programme.
- Hostel, mess, transport and examination charges.
- Refundability of seat-booking fees.
- Scholarships, fee waivers and education-loan support.
A calm formula
Total cost of the programme divided by the documented value (a recognised degree, a verified placement rate, entry into a competitive exam pipeline). If two options offer the same documented value, take the cheaper one. If a costlier option offers clearly better and verifiable outcomes and your family can afford it without distress, it may be worth it.
Career options, salary and placements
Graduates of top Indian universities go into research, civil services, law, medicine, engineering, finance, consulting, technology, media, teaching and entrepreneurship. Some pursue postgraduate study abroad.
We will not quote a single average salary. Packages vary by course, recruiter and year, and brochures often publish the highest offer. Ask each institution: how many students registered for placement, how many received offers, what was the median package, and what share of students chose higher studies instead.
Skills that a university should build
- Critical reading and writing.
- Quantitative reasoning and digital literacy.
- Research method and academic integrity.
- Collaboration across disciplines, which is the main promise of NEP 2020.
- Professional readiness through internships, labs, clinics and projects.
Scope: studying in India vs abroad
India now offers world-class institutions at a fraction of the cost of studying overseas, and the National Education Policy encourages multi-disciplinary learning and foreign collaboration. Studying abroad can add global exposure but at a much higher cost and with visa and living-cost risks. Many students choose Indian undergraduate study followed by postgraduate study abroad, which spreads cost and risk.
Public vs private university: how to decide
| Factor | Public (central or state) | Private or deemed |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Low | High |
| Admission difficulty | High competition | Varies |
| Campus facilities | Varies; often older | Often newer |
| Placements | Strong in top institutions; uneven elsewhere | Depends on the university |
| Risk if you must borrow | Low | High |
Pros and cons of aiming for a top-ranked university
