Details
CEN 08/2026 brings a new pattern for Station Master. There is now a single-stage computer-based test (CBT) instead of the two-stage pattern used for NTPC graduate posts, and General Awareness is no longer tested.
The CBT has 100 questions for 100 marks in 120 minutes, with one-third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer. It has three sections: Basic Science, Mathematical and Analytical Capability (60 marks, roughly 30 on basic science and mathematics and 30 on data analysis and interpretation), Logical Capability (20 marks, including English reading comprehension) and Mental Reasoning (20 marks). Marks are normalised when the test runs in several shifts.
About 8 times the RRB-wise vacancies are called for the computer-based aptitude test (CBAT). You need a T-score of at least 42 in every test battery, with no relaxation for any category, and there is no negative marking. The final merit list combines the CBT (70%) and the CBAT (30%).
Topics, as listed in the published write-ups of the notice: - Basic Science and Mathematics: number system, ratio, percentage, profit and loss, time and work, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics, units and measurement, work, energy, heat, electricity, simple machines. - Data Analysis and Interpretation: tables, bar and line graphs, pie charts, scatter plots, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency, data arrangement, multi-source data. - Logical Capability: binary logic, syllogism, clocks and calendars, assumptions, blood relations and family trees, logical puzzles, English reading comprehension. - Mental Reasoning: analogy, series completion, coding-decoding, ranking and arrangement.
Confirm the section names and marks in the official CEN 08/2026 notice before you plan your preparation around them.
How to use this
- Spend most of your time on the 60-mark section; data interpretation is half of it.
- Practise English reading comprehension, which is new for this post.
- Drop general awareness from your plan; it is not tested.
- Take full 100-question mocks against a 120-minute clock and keep wrong guesses low because of the 1/3 penalty.
- If you clear the CBT, practise psycho-aptitude test batteries for the CBAT.
