Exam pattern

Single 3-hour computer test with all MCQs of 2 marks each and no negative marking: attempt every question. Paper 1 tests teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, maths and reasoning, logic, data interpretation, ICT, people and environment, and higher-education systems. Paper 2 tests the chosen subject at postgraduate depth across its notified units.

Syllabus, subject by subject

Paper 1 (10 units): teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, mathematical reasoning, logical reasoning, data interpretation, ICT, people-development-environment, higher education system. Paper 2: the full postgraduate syllabus of the chosen subject (83 subjects including Commerce, Management, English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Computer Science, Education). Study unit-wise with previous papers marking high-weight units.

Important dates and how to apply

NTA conducts NET twice a year (June and December cycles) on ugcnet.nta.ac.in. This guide carries no dates. Choose the cycle that gives your Paper 2 syllabus completion enough runway.

Selection process

  • Single sitting: Paper 1 plus Paper 2 with combined 300 marks.
  • Qualifying: minimum marks per paper plus overall cut-offs by category.
  • Result categories: JRF plus Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor only, or PhD-only eligibility per cut-offs.

How to prepare

Since there is no negative marking, build full-syllabus coverage with attempt-all mock discipline. Finish Paper 1 units with weekly quizzes (they are the cheapest 100 marks), study Paper 2 unit-wise with standard texts and previous papers, and revise with one-page unit summaries rather than re-reading chapters.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving questions unattempted despite no negative marking.
  • Preparing only Paper 2 and treating Paper 1 casually.
  • Choosing a subject mismatched to postgraduation.
  • Ignoring previous-paper unit weightage.
  • Skipping data-interpretation and reasoning practice.

Career opportunities

Assistant Professor eligibility opens college and university recruitment; JRF funds PhD research with monthly fellowship. NET qualification also strengthens PSU, research and content careers. Check fellowship amounts in the notification.
