What this guide covers

SSC CHSL exam overview

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is the 12th-pass counterpart of CGL, recruiting Lower Division Clerks, Junior Secretariat Assistants and Data Entry Operators for ministries and offices. Because the qualification bar is lower, competition per vacancy runs extremely high and cut-offs stay elevated. Trust only ssc.gov.in for the notification.

60 minutes with 0.50 negative marking per wrong answer. Quant stays at 10th-standard level, which rewards speed over depth.

Tier 2

An objective computer test (recent cycles added a Tier 2 objective paper with maths, reasoning, English and GA) plus the qualifying skill or typing test for the applied post. Final merit uses Tier 2 objective scores subject to qualifying the skill test. Confirm the current Tier 2 composition in the notification, since SSC revises it.

Syllabus, subject by subject

English: comprehension, cloze, error spotting, idioms, one-word, synonyms and antonyms at 12th level. Reasoning: analogies, coding-decoding, series, syllogisms, non-verbal, directions. Quant: percentages, averages, interest, profit-loss, mensuration basics, algebra basics, data interpretation at 10th level. GA: history, polity, geography, science, static GK plus current affairs.

Important dates and how to apply

SSC advertises CHSL yearly on ssc.gov.in. This guide carries no dates. Choose post preferences carefully since LDC, JSA and DEO differ in skill tests and departments.

Selection process

  • Tier 1 screening.
  • Tier 2 objective plus qualifying skill or typing test.
  • Document verification and medical with merit-cum-preference allotment.

How to prepare

Since the syllabus is 10th to 12th level, toppers win on speed and accuracy: daily 60-minute Tier 1 mocks, 15-minute calculation drills, weekly GA revision and typing practice from month one (skill tests fail unprepared candidates every cycle). Maintain an error log and re-attempt every mistake within 48 hours.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring typing or DEO speed practice until shortlisted.
  • Over-studying advanced quant while 10th-level speed lags.
  • Skipping GA revision despite its 50 marks.
  • Guessing under 0.50 negative marking.
  • Choosing DEO without the Science-Maths 12th requirement.

Career opportunities

LDC and JSA staff handle clerical, file and data work in ministries with promotion to UDC and beyond through seniority and departmental exams. DEOs handle data operations with technical allowances in some offices. Check pay levels in the notification.
