Syllabus, subject by subject

Maths: number system, percentages, interest, profit-loss, time-work, mensuration, algebra basics, DI. Reasoning: analogies, series, coding, syllogisms, puzzles, data sufficiency. GA: railways (budget, zones, electrification, Vande Bharat, freight), polity, history, geography, science, sports, current affairs. Railway-specific awareness separates NTPC toppers.

Important dates and how to apply

RRBs advertise NTPC zone-wise with staggered schedules. This guide carries no dates. Apply to one RRB only and verify post-wise eligibility before locking undergraduate versus graduate posts.

Selection process

  • CBT 1 screening by RRB and post.
  • CBT 2 merit.
  • Typing or CBAT qualifying for applicable posts.
  • Verification and medical before allotment.

How to prepare

Study railways as a dedicated GA subject (zones, production units, budgets, modernisation) alongside daily maths and reasoning sets. Take CBT 2-level mocks from month two, practise typing early if your posts need it, and attempt CBAT-style aptitude only for Station Master tracks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Generic GA without railway-specific content.
  • Applying to the wrong RRB or post track.
  • Ignoring typing until after CBT 2.
  • Treating CBT 1 as merit and relaxing for CBT 2.
  • Missing medical-standard awareness.

Career opportunities

Station Masters manage train operations; Goods Guards, clerks and commercial staff handle freight, reservations and accounts with promotion through departmental exams to officer grades. Check pay levels in the notification.
