Objective format with negative marking and separate cut-offs.
Phase 2
Paper 1 - English (descriptive) plus Paper 2 - advanced law with case-based and applied questions on securities regulation, enforcement and recent orders.
Syllabus, subject by subject
Securities laws: SEBI Act, SCRA, Depositories Act, key regulations,Guidance notes and landmark SAT and Supreme Court orders. Core law: Constitution with emphasis on markets and regulators, Contract Act, Companies Act, CPC and CrPC procedure basics, Evidence, Administrative Law. Important dates and how to apply
Apply on sebi.gov.in under the Legal stream of the live advertisement. Vacancies in Legal are few, so apply early and verify document requirements for the law degree.
Selection process
- Phase 1 screening with per-paper cut-offs.
- Phase 2 descriptive English and advanced law.
- Interview, verification and medical.
How to prepare
Anchor preparation in securities statutes and one standard commentary, then add recent SEBI orders and circulars monthly. Practise issue-spotting answers rather than essay-style writing for Paper 2, keep general aptitude timed, and write descriptive English weekly since lawyers often underrate that paper.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying only general law and skipping securities regulation.
- Ignoring recent SEBI orders and SAT decisions.
- Under-preparing the general Paper 1 and missing its cut-off.
- Writing narrative answers instead of structured legal analysis.
- Skipping descriptive English practice.
Career opportunities
Legal officers handle enforcement proceedings, appeals, vetting of regulations and coordination with counsel. The role builds rare securities-law expertise with progression inside SEBI grades and later opportunities across market institutions. Check pay scales in the advertisement.
