Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences 2026: Robert Hall and Michael Woodford

International AffairsOctober 12, 2026

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences to Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford for their work on microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.

WHAT HAPPENED

On 12 October 2026 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm announced that the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for 2026 is awarded jointly to Robert E. Hall (Stanford University, USA) and Michael Woodford (Columbia University, USA). The Academy cited their contributions "for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation".

THE WORK AND ITS IMPACT

Following the stagflation shocks of the 1970s, older Keynesian models struggled to explain simultaneous high inflation and unemployment. Hall and Woodford developed modern macroeconomic frameworks that grounded aggregate economic fluctuations in forward-looking microeconomic decisions made by households and businesses.

  • Robert E. Hall demonstrated in 1978 that if consumers are forward-looking and optimize over time, consumption behaves like a "random walk"—meaning only unanticipated news changes consumption paths, fundamentally reshaping consumption theory and fiscal policy analysis.
  • Michael Woodford provided the microeconomic foundations of modern monetary theory (notably in his seminal 2003 treatise Interest and Prices), establishing the New Keynesian framework used by central banks worldwide to manage interest rates and inflation expectations without relying solely on traditional money supply aggregates.

THE PRIZE

  • Prize amount: 12 million Swedish kronor (approx. 1.2 million US dollars), shared equally.
  • Unlike the original five Nobel Prizes instituted by Alfred Nobel's 1895 will, the Economics prize was established in 1968 by Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden's central bank) on its 300th anniversary.
  • Award ceremony takes place in Stockholm on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
