How to revise the Economic Survey: who prepares it, when it is tabled, its chapter structure and the indicators exams ask about.

ABOUT THIS NOTE This is a revision framework for the Economic Survey, written to be used alongside the official document each year. It tells you what the Survey is, what it contains and how to extract exam-ready points from it. WHAT IS THE ECONOMIC SURVEY - It is the Government's annual review of the state of the economy, prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, under the guidance of the Chief Economic Adviser. - It is tabled in Parliament by the Finance Minister, normally a day before the Union Budget. - It is not a constitutional requirement; it has been published since 1950-51 and was combined with the Budget until 1964. - It is advisory, with no legal force, and does not contain the Government's tax or spending proposals. HOW IT IS ORGANISED The Survey usually has two volumes. Volume 1 covers the central theme, the macro-economy and policy discussion; Volume 2 gives sector reviews and a statistical appendix. Typical chapters cover the state of the economy, fiscal developments, monetary management and financial intermediation, prices and inflation, external sector, agriculture, industry, services, infrastructure, social sector and climate and sustainability. WHAT TO NOTE WHILE READING - Headline numbers: GDP growth estimate and forecast for the next year, inflation, fiscal deficit, current account deficit and foreign exchange reserves. - The theme of that year's Survey and any new indices, reports or schemes it highlights. - Sector facts: agriculture share, manufacturing and PLI scheme progress, services exports, and digital public infrastructure. - Banking indicators such as credit growth, gross NPA ratio and capital adequacy. HOW TO REVISE Make a one-page sheet with five columns: macro numbers, fiscal, external, sectors and social. Add two lines on policy themes. Re-read it once a week until the exam. EXAM ANGLE Questions ask who prepares the Survey, when it is tabled, whether it is mandatory, the Chief Economic Adviser's role and the year's headline numbers. Pair this sheet with the Budget Highlights note. Source: Pratiyogita Kosh editorial team. Confirm the latest figures from official sources before an exam.
